Housing Trend Embraces the Mantra: Smaller is Better

This article is more than 10 years old.

Call it the McMansion backlash. Or a rejection of the housing-tract boom that ate up ex-urban land like a rabid Pac-Man. This would be the trend towards smaller homes.

Champions of this trend see tiny homes as a way to embrace decreased living costs, although it is less about saving money and more embracing a new, more sustainable and, often times, saner lifestyle.

From constructing a teeny home from scratch — NPR featured one that measured in at 84 square feet — to seeking an existing diminutive dwelling, the trend is small, but mighty.

Interested in downsizing? We rounded up a few homes that clock in at 900 square feet or under. You might be surprised what a little house can do for you.
